• Determine the wind energy resource at the location of interest. 

For individual property owners, as well as small farms and businesses, the best tool available is a high resolution wind resource map. See Links for those judged acceptable for your specific state. There are also other resources available, including local correlation measurements, to allow a rapid, accurate, and economic assessment to be made. For large businesses and commercial wind projects, a long term (min. of one year), in-depth study of the wind resource available is normally recommended. If you believe your home, farm or business is located in a windy area, Airevolution can assist you to determine the wind resource at your specific location.

• Determine the amount of electricity you wish to produce from your wind energy system. 

If you're interested in a grid-connected system and are trying to take advantage of net metering, this normally can be determined by examining your electric bills to find your electricity consumption. Producing an amount from your wind turbine that is equivalent to your consumption, will normally prove to be most cost effective. You may want to consider more or less than this amount, depending on other factors, such as the size of your property, amount you're willing to invest, etc. The grid-connected system has the advantage of allowing the grid to act as a battery, eliminating the need for this costly addition to your alternate energy system. Any excess instantaneous power you produce in high wind conditions will be effectively absorbed by the grid, and any additional instantaneous consumption you need in low wind conditions will be supplied by the grid. As explained in the FAQs, the net metering provision assures that you are compensated for the excess instantaneous power that you produce (at retail rates) to make up for any excess instantaneous power you consume.

If you are considering an off-grid system, there are additional factors to consider, such as the battery capacity available, the output from any other hybrid alternative energy sources, and the size of any backup generator you might have. Airevolution will work with you to determine the optimum size wind generator for your installation.

For either grid-connected or off-grid systems, you may want to consider a hybrid system consisting of wind and solar photovoltaic. Solar photovoltaic systems are generally complimentary to wind generators in that the production from wind generators is typically higher in winter months when that from solar PV is at its lowest, and conversely, production from solar PV is highest in summer when that from wind generators is at its lowest. Airevolution will work with you to determine the optimal percentage of each method to use under either the grid-connected or off-grid configuration.
 

• Airevolution will provide cost estimates for different wind energy systems that are commercially available in the production range and configuration under consideration (grid-connected/off-grid), and will provide an estimate of the production of each, utilizing the wind energy resource determined in step one. 
 
We will also provide other details of the units under consideration, such as turbine dimensions and operating characteristics, tower height options and characteristics, foundation requirements, installation methods, etc., to allow you to perform an effective cost benefit analysis. We will also provide information on all available government subsidy programs, tax incentives,  as well as information on zoning & building permit requirements, and any other site specific issues that might apply. This information will allow you to make an informed decision on whether or not to proceed, and if so, to what extent.
